How to prioritize your life to focus on what matters
Learning how to prioritize your life is about creating quality time with yourself.
That may not be what you expected to hear. It could be that you want to learn how to optimize your schedule.
I’ve worked with high-performing CEOs for five years. We never work on their time, we work on their energy.
Your energy is the finite one. We can optimize you and your energy to do even more of what you love.
This post is all about how to prioritize your life.
What does it mean to prioritize your life?
Prioritizing your life means putting yourself and your needs first on a daily basis.
This includes your feelings. It’s easy to dismiss your emotional state when you’re busy. That’s what most people do.
I’m not sure that work-life balance is possible. But I do believe in balancing logic, and intuition.
To be in tune with your intuition, you need to make enough time to connect with your feelings. This is about tapping into the big picture for your life.
From your soul’s perspective, small things matter.
When you focus on your feelings, you slow down to ensure alignment with your actions.
Connecting with your body is so important. That’s where your emotions live.
Once you reconnect to your body, and your emotions, the rest falls into place.
What are the top priorities for life?
Your season or life will have an impact on your priorities. They will change as you age as well.
You may have prioritized clubbing in your twenties. Now in your thirties, a 10 pm bedtime is non-negotiable.
I’ve compiled this list to help you explore some different priorities. Find a blend that works for you and be flexible if things change.
They always do.
Physical Health
If you don’t feel well, you can’t hit your important goals. Good health is key for sustainability.
Healthy habits including taking care of your body.
Start with areas that feel off first. This could be your body, or needing to exercise and stretch. It may be your sleep schedule or how you eat.
It doesn’t matter where you are in your journey. It’s never too late to turn things around.
Spiritual Health
For spiritual health, I like to begin with simple questions to get the ball rolling. This involves self-reflection with a journal.
You can’t know where you’re going if you don’t know where you’re starting. Rather than repeating the same patterns, set some new priorities.
These can include your old priorities if they are valuable to you!
Spiritual health can take your deepest desires into account. This includes life mission, and soul purpose.
This is where you feel true happiness, peace and contentment. It fills you with a sense of purpose.
True emotional processing happens on a deep level. This is deep self-reflection.
Once you settle into your body, insights and healing rise up within you.
You won’t be able to explain it, but you’ll feel better and clearer. Things will make sense from the inside out.
If you’re consistent it won’t take much time to get there.
Personal Life
It may be tempting to make your career goals a high priority, but you won’t care about these on your death bed someday. Sure, you may feel a sense of accomplishment. You will be proud of the lives you’ve changed.
But, at the end of the day, who is around you when your time comes is what you’ll be focusing on.
Rather than doing a goal brain dump, do one for your personal life.
Create specific goals around what you want to experience and feel in this lifetime. Those are the memories you’re going to take with you.
And if you need a listening ear, ask a friend or family member to brainstorm with you.
Your own values
Your values are your personal truths. What do you hold true to you? What does your heart say? Do you listen?
Your core values are what makes you, you. Knowing what they are gives you a compass to navigate your choices.
Operating by your values also creates a deep sense of meaning and purpose.
What you create based on your values will last for a long time.
Celebration
How often do you take time to celebrate little successes?
It can be hard to see the forest for the trees when you’re always working.
Pausing to acknowledge what you’ve accomplished will fuel you to keep going.
When you hit a goal or milestone, celebrate in some way. You can do this ahead of time, by pre-planning a vacation at the end of your quarter.
Choose some action steps that work for you and keep going!
Time Management
Important tasks are not only career-related. They include day-to-day activities for your mental health, spirit, emotions, and body.
Creating daily habits that support every area of your life is often an afterthought.
If you’re a planner, you can include your personal tasks in order of importance on your planner.
If you’re not a planner, keep an eye on how you feel. Shift your daily activities when you realize you need something different.
Professional Goals
Yes, your professional goals are some of the most important things to work towards.
Whether you have big goals or little ones, each contributes to feeling accomplished.
There’s nothing better than feeling like you hit your goals and achieved something you set out to do.
If that feeling completes you, that’s all you need to do. If it doesn’t, include time for your personal goals as well.
Community
If your iimmediate family is a source of comfort and community for you, carve out time for them every week.
If your family isn’t, create a community that provides this for you.
You can meet new friends by using some of your personal time to explore new groups with similar hobbies.
I’ve met a lot of mine through groups of my current friends, or online.
I love later meeting them in person.
We create our own good times in life based on what we value!
Trying different things can help you explore hobbies you never considered.
Play Time
Hard work and no play make life very dull. The saying goes something like that anyway!
Striving for balance is very difficult. It becomes another task on the to-do list.
Instead of working on balance, introduce play or pleasurable activities into your day.
Adding something you enjoy to your daily tasks makes the rest of the day palatable.
Feeling Good
One of the best ways to feel better is by gaining control over your emotions.
Since emotions and feelings are different, let’s take a minute to understand them.
Emotions are sensations in your body. Feelings arise from your thoughts about the emotions.
Then, you use logic to interpret how you feel about the emotions. And, you assign meaning to them.
This is what creates the feeling word about the emotion.
Feeling good can change from person to person. While one person may feel good drinking alcohol, another person may not.
If you’ve had a tumultuous upbringing, you are likely disconnected from your body.
This is particularly true if you don’t know how you feel from moment to moment, or can’t put a word to it.
Allowing yourself to feel good takes practice. The first step is to notice the difference between when you feel good and when you don’t.
- What were you doing when you felt good?
- Who were you engaging with?
- What were you thinking?
You can use these same questions when evaluating when you didn’t feel good.
Feeling good is about embodiment. It’s about feeling both heavy and light emotions in your body.
When you suppress emotions, they become trauma.
Sometimes suppressing is necessary when we aren’t able to process it in the moment. Especially if there is shock involved.
Sometimes it’s a coping mechanism.
A huge part of healing is knowing when to reapproach your healing process as an adult.
When you take full responsibility for your healing, true healing will take place.
This comes down to learning how to develop your masculine energy.
Masculine energy is not simply doing things. It can hold space for every emotion and feeling with compassion.
Developed masculine energy isn’t reactive, it’s responsive.
When you hold space for your emotions with your own masculine energy, your feminine energy heals.
Sometimes priorities aren’t about doing more or finding balance.
It’s about putting your energy in the right things, at the right time.
Your current situation will give you clues about what the next priority is.
Look for areas that are off. They are causing a trigger for you, or weighing on you.
Then, take some extra time to sit with how you feel about it.
Take out a piece of paper and write. What does your heart tell you to do next? It won’t be something external. It won’t be more action.
It’ll be something your emotions are connected to.
You’ll feel it inside as a nudge, or a pull in a certain direction. It may even sound crazy to you at first. If it does, that’s great!
You’re on the right track.
Intuition doesn’t make sense to your mind but follow it anyway.
The right way will always feel right.
Listening to your intuition, and your heart to guide your next steps is an ongoing process.
It’s not the only process, but I’ve found it’s the best method for living a meaningful life.
